Kerala State Police Pairs Talent with Technology to Deliver Digital Intelligence

India’s Kerala State, located on the country’s southwestern coast, has seen an unprecedented increase in cases involving mobile devices. Today, the Kerala Police Forensics Laboratory, founded in 2009 by Dr. S. P. Sunil, has as many as 800 mobile phones arrive at his cybercrime unit per year. In fact, for a recent case, 35 mobile phones were assigned to investigators.

In 2019, Kerala was rocked by a sensational murder case. The Police were able to recover pieces of the victim’s Xiaomi Mi Max 2 mobile phone, which had been broken and scattered around Kerala to destroy the evidence.

Key Challenges:

  • Collect data from a destroyed phone in order to uncover Digital Intelligence that links suspects to a woman’s murder
  • Piles of phone parts that need to be reassembled and functional again
  • Lack of technical staff or accessories to put the broken phone back together
  • Rebuilding the phone and connecting it to the motherboard and central display unit
