Key takeaways from our on-demand webinar titled ‘Smarter Mobile Data Collections with Cellebrite and RelativityOne’.

This year, Cellebrite introduced a powerful integration with RelativityOne, bringing mobile device collections and forensic analysis to the forefront of legal workflows. This partnership optimizes mobile data preservation, particularly from remote devices and enhances the eDiscovery process by streamlining the collection and analysis of mobile data.

Seamless Integration for Mobile Data Collection

To begin, administrators need to set up either Endpoint Inspector or Endpoint Mobile Now, which involves configuring users and API connections to RelativityOne. Once the connection is established, mobile data is collected, processed and transferred to RelativityOne for review. The critical first step is creating an API key to link the two systems and setting up OAuth2 clients in RelativityOne, ensuring smooth communication between platforms.

Data Security and Temporary Storage

One of the main questions addressed during the session was data security and storage. Cellebrite explained that when collections are made, the data is initially transferred to Cellebrite’s servers for processing. Once processed, the data is parsed and moved to RelativityOne, where it is stored and secured. Cellebrite does not retain the data after it is uploaded to RelativityOne. However, during collection, temporary storage is required on the device or an external drive. Users should ensure adequate storage is available to avoid disruptions, especially in cases where devices have limited space.

Workflow Optimization and User Experience

A frequent concern raised was whether custodians could interact with their devices during data collection. While custodians can use their phones during collection, it’s not recommended, as it can disrupt the process. The collection speed generally takes under an hour, depending on the device’s data and network speeds. The team emphasized that the process is designed to be efficient, with an average data collection taking less than 60 minutes from start to finish.

Cost Considerations

When it comes to costs, there is no additional charge for using the RelativityOne integration, as it’s included in the platform. However, users must have a license for Endpoint Inspector or Endpoint Mobile. For existing customers, there’s an added cost for the decoding service, which is required to process the collected data into a format that RelativityOne can read.

Advanced Filtering and Data Selection

The webinar also touched on advanced filtering options for data collection. For example, users can choose specific categories of data (like photos, messages or call logs) to collect, preventing the need to capture everything from a device. Filtering at the time of collection is crucial, as once the data is collected, the full database is processed and filtered on the backend before it’s sent to RelativityOne. This approach ensures that only relevant data is retained, facilitating faster, more efficient review workflows.

Addressing Challenges with Device Profiles and Data Access

For devices with multiple profiles, such as business and personal profiles, there are challenges in filtering specific data. Currently, the integration collects data from both profiles. However, Cellebrite and Relativity are working on ways to provide more granular control over what gets collected. In the case of devices with passcodes or locked devices, the integration requires custodians’ consent and active participation in unlocking their phones before collection can proceed, ensuring compliance and respecting privacy.

Conclusion

The integration between Cellebrite and RelativityOne provides a powerful solution for legal teams seeking to preserve mobile data remotely. By allowing for streamlined mobile data collection, advanced filtering options and integration with RelativityOne for easy review, this solution enhances the eDiscovery process and improves efficiency. Whether dealing with company-owned or personal devices, this integration helps legal teams manage mobile data in a secure, efficient manner. As the service continues to expand globally, more customers will have access to this essential tool for modern data preservation and legal holds.
