Can you recognize an AI-generated image during a digital forensics investigation?

Not easily — and there is no single universal indicator. Research presented by Heather and Jared found that AI-generated images often lack standard camera metadata, showing generic identifiers like “Google” or “Apple Inc.” rather than a specific device model and OS. File paths, file names and embedded class names have also revealed AI origins in some cases. Detection requires a multi-artifact approach and examiner validation at every step.

How does AI fit into tools like UFED and Physical Analyzer?

Machine learning is already active in Physical Analyzer through optional media categorization — examiners can elect to use it for image detection and classification. Broader applications include chat summarization, pattern-of-life analysis across a date range and facial similarity searching within Pathfinder. The consistent principle across all of these: AI-assisted findings must be validated against the underlying digital evidence before they inform any case decision.

Can AI help parse large datasets to surface behavioral patterns?

Yes — and this is one of the strongest practical use cases available today. Feeding a structured log file into an AI model and asking it to isolate activity on specific days or times can significantly reduce manual effort. The same approach applies to generating synthetic test datasets or writing SQL queries without deep coding experience. As always, outputs must be verified against source evidence before any investigative action is taken.

What should investigators know about AI and chain of custody?

AI must never replace the examiner in the evidence review process. Any AI-assisted finding — whether from a forensic tool or an external model — needs to be traced back to the source evidence and validated by a human before it enters a report or courtroom. Agencies should have clear policies in place governing which AI tools can be used, under what conditions and how findings are documented to preserve chain of custody and court admissibility.

What are the risks of using external AI tools like ChatGPT in investigations?

The primary risks are data privacy and model retention. Feeding case data, PII or evidence artifacts into an external AI model without authorization may violate agency policy, compromise an investigation or expose sensitive information. Before using any external AI tool, investigators should confirm what their agency permits — and should never input actual evidence into a model that hasn’t been approved for that purpose.
