Course Description

Cellebrite Chip-Off Forensics (CCOF) is a five (5) day expert level course led by Cellebrite Certified Instructors (CCIs). During the Chip-Off course, participants will learn about the chip-off milling process, IR Heat and polishing through the board, flash memory in mobile devices (NAND/NOR, eMMC/eMCP, UFS), methodologies, and purpose as well as understand the equipment and accessories necessary for performing successful chip-off extractions. With the successful completion of the written and practical test, students will earn the CCOF Certification.

Course Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the purpose and appropriate scenarios for when the advanced chip-off technique can be used to obtain an extraction.
  • Explain the Flash memory types and how they may impact the chip-off extraction methods and results.
  • Research devices and memory chip types to determine if a chip-off extraction is necessary or possible.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely remove a memory chip using the milling method, the Infrared Heat rework station, and polishing method.
  • Use soldering equipment and cleaning techniques for successfully cleaning memory chips for data extraction.
  • Obtain physical extractions of subtracted memory chips using memory chip adapters and software, Z3X, and other flasher boxes.
  • Examine data, using Physical Analyzer, from successful chip-off extractions.
  • Explain legal considerations and consequences resulting from the chip-off extraction method.
