The New Age of Investigations: Cellebrite’s Journey to Genesis
Key Takeways
- Cellebrite Genesis is a purpose-built agentic AI product that helps investigators reduce investigation time, turning days or weeks of manual work into minutes.
- Generally available as of June 2026, Genesis analyzes more than 35 evidence formats, including call detail records, messages, images, video and audio, without or without mobile extraction.
- Investigators stay in control: Genesis maintains chain of custody, shows where every finding comes from, and supports evidence validation for court.
- In early access, more than 800 users across 300 agencies ran Genesis on active cases. In one exploitation case it surfaced 16 previously unidentified victims in 15 minutes, work an investigator estimated would have taken two weeks.
“Imagine a world where AI goes from the threat operator it can be now – to your partner,” said Cellebrite’s CEO Tom Hogan, posing this reality to a room full of hundreds of Cellebrite customers at the 2025 inaugural C2C User Summit in Washington, D.C.
Less than a year later, that vision is now a reality. The journey to the new age of investigations was filled with challenges that no one had solved before.
Cellebrite Genesis, first introduced in early access in March 2026, is now generally available for our customers as of June 2026. Genesis is a purpose-built agentic AI product designed to function as an investigative assistant – helping to surface leads quickly – transforming what would be days and sometimes weeks of manual investigative work into just minutes.
Genesis was built for investigators to meet the specific demands of their work, yet it can be and is being used by anyone in the investigative workflow. It works directly with the forensic data formats investigators use every day, follows proven investigative practices, maintains chain of custody and shows exactly where its findings come from in the underlying evidence. Genesis can analyze more than 35 evidence formats, including call detail records, warrant returns, documents, messages, images, video and audio – with or without mobile extractions involved.
Don’t Miss: AI in Digital Forensics: 10 Best Practices for Investigators
Unlike general purpose AI-models, Genesis is backed by more than 25 years of Cellebrite’s investigative expertise and extensive investment in AI development. Investigators stay in control throughout the entire process, using AI to accelerate their work while retaining full authority over investigative decisions including validation of the evidence – a crucial step for the court process.
The Genesis of Genesis
The amount of data our customers must sift through in investigations is staggering. Digital forensic examiners continuously report smartphones nearing or surpassing a terabyte of data. When you add in all the other data types in an investigation, it’s nearly impossible to manually go through all of it. What that translates to in real time is justice delayed when crimes go unsolved, dangerous predators remain out there searching for their next victim and organized criminal networks planning their drug shipment or terrorist attack.
This initiative was DRIVEN in partnership with our customers. Understanding exactly what would best serve our customers was a critical design point in developing Genesis. I personally spent A LOT of late evenings and weekend hours getting to know them and their agencies, asking questions and finetuning. We heard the pushback, fear and uneasiness around AI, yet our mission for this project was straightforward: to create something our customers could use to make their jobs easier so they could solve cases faster.
Early on, we had customers trying out the product alongside Cellebrite subject matter experts. The feedback was invaluable – helping to guide our team on where to focus and advising on what needed to be changed. All of a sudden, we started to build momentum from the eagerness they expressed with using Genesis, and the immediate and stunning impact on their real investigations.
The Go-Ahead for Genesis
Reducing Investigation Time in Real Time
While this was an experimental process, we knew immediately it was more than that. As soon as I saw its magic and continued to hear increasing positive feedback from our customers, I began pushing for Genesis to be a product on its own.
We quickly recognized the impact of what we were protoyping, what would become Genesis, and formed a dedicated, focused team to go build the product. The goal then and today is to continue to innovate rapidly and bring Genesis unique value in the hands of our customers
Genesis has been in Early Access with more than 800 users in some 300 national, state and local agencies around the globe working active casework on crimes against children, narcotics, human trafficking, homicide, cold cases and more. Here are just two of the many customers who are seeing remarkable results with Genesis.
“Genesis compressed months of analytical work into a single hour for our team. It connected the entire investigation together and presented it in a way that an intel analyst, a forensic investigator or even a layperson in a courtroom can easily understand. In cases involving juveniles, time is a critical factor, and we simply don’t have that luxury. Our team still validates everything, as they should, but Genesis provides a starting point that fundamentally changes the equation.”
– Lt. Jim Hill, Lab Director, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
“In a recent grooming and exploitation case, our team ingested data from three suspect devices, and within 15 minutes Genesis surfaced 16 previously unidentified victims. Manual review would have taken our investigators an estimated two weeks. The case has since been forwarded to federal prosecution. Genesis is no longer a luxury tool. It is a critical resource for victim identification in time-sensitive exploitation cases.”
-Lt. Jerod K. Abshire of the Digital Forensics Unit with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.
We are proud to deliver on the vision of “AI as a partner” and Genesis has been a journey for everyone. And that journey continues as our development team works long hours behind the scenes and improves the product with every piece of feedback. We are honored to be on this journey together in the new age of investigations.
